Hong Kong Champions Day Preview

Amidst these very strange times, we hope that you are all safe and well.

With lockdown in the UK set to continue and racing still suspended, we are very much looking forward to top class racing this weekend in Hong Kong. The FWD Champions Day has three Group 1 races and over £6,500,000 of prize money on offer.

Gordon-Watson Bloodstock has three privately purchased horses running on Champions Day, one in each of the three Group 1 races.

PLAYA DEL PUENTE will take his place in the feature race, the Group 1 QEII Cup. The four-year-old Irish import is in excellent form, having only just been beaten by Golden Sixty in the Group 1 Hong Kong Derby.

In the Group 1 Champions Mile, MORE THAN THIS will take on Hong Kong's top rated miler Beauty Generation. Placed in all 3 legs of the 2020 4YO Classic Series, More Than This has shown top class consistency and is sure to put up a big performance.

Last but not least, BIG TIME BABY will take his place in the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint Prize. He was on course to contest the Group 1 Golden Shaheen at the Dubai World Cup Carnival in March, but the worldwide lockdown put paid to that. The six-year-old is a five time winner in Hong Kong, winning three times at Sha Tin this season and holds a solid chance.

Scherzo (Wootton Bassett/ Persian Belle) landed an impressive victory in Qatar over the weekend to win the HE Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy. The 3-y-o colt was purchased by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock for €420,000 at the Arqana Arc Horses-In-Training sale for owners Alwasmiyah Stud. CEPHALUS lands the four-timer!

CEPAHLUS (Cable Bay/Angels Wings) landed the four-timer at Newcastle with another impressive win. A great training performance by Charlie Hills and the team for owners Jerry Hinds and Philip Herbert. The son of Cable Bay was purchased from Highclere Stud by Gordon-Watson Bloodstock at Tattersalls Book 2 for only 11,000 gns. An exciting horse to follow this year!
